Important safeguarding changes
The Department for Education (DfE) is set to roll out important safeguarding changes on 1st September 2025, aimed at reinforcing child safety across childcare settings. These updates reflect a commitment to align with best practices in safeguarding, focusing on several key areas:
1. Safer Recruitment
Employers will now be required to obtain references for staff before they start working with children, ensuring a history of safety and professionalism.
2. Child Absence Follow-Up
Childcare providers must now follow up on prolonged absences, using emergency contact details to prioritize children's welfare.
3. Safer Eating Environments
At least one staff member present during meals must hold a valid paediatric first aid certificate to enhance safety during mealtimes.
4. Paediatric First Aid Training
Early years students will be required to complete this training, which will also be included in staff-to-child ratios, ensuring qualified personnel are always available.
5.Enhanced Safeguarding Training
The DfE is revising training delivery and content requirements to better equip staff for safeguarding challenges.
6. Whistleblowing Protections
New guidelines will empower staff to report safeguarding concerns without fear of reprisal, promoting transparency.
7. Children’s Privacy
Safeguarding measures will now include considerations for children's privacy during nappy changing, ensuring dignity at all times.
